Winter Guide: What to Do When the Snow Falls

How to make the most of Winter in Stardew Valley — winter crops, fishing, mining, tool upgrades, and preparing for Spring.

Winter can feel like a dead season — no regular crops grow in the snow. But it’s actually the perfect time to catch up on everything you ignored all year. Here’s what to do.

Winter crops: the wild seeds

Most crops won’t grow in Winter, but Winter Seeds will. You can craft them from the four foraged winter items (Crystal Fruit, Crocus, Snow Yam, Winter Root), which you’ll find scattered around the map.

  • Forage these four items.
  • Craft them into Winter Seeds.
  • Plant, harvest, and use the harvest to craft more seeds.

It’s a self-sustaining loop that turns winter foraging into a decent little crop cycle.

Foraging

Winter foraging items are worth good money and feed your Winter Seeds:

  • Crystal Fruit, Crocus, Snow Yam, Winter Root — found on the ground around town and the map.
  • Beach foraging continues too — shells and coral still spawn.

Fishing

Fishing doesn’t stop in Winter, and some fish are exclusive to winter:

  • The Glacierfish Glacierfish (legendary) is winter-only.
  • River and lake fish still bite all season.

Mining (the best winter activity)

With no crops to tend, Winter is the ideal time to mine:

  • Stockpile ores for tool upgrades.
  • Gather gems to sell or gift.
  • Take on the Skull Cavern for Iridium and Prismatic Shards.

Tool upgrades

Upgrade your watering can in Winter — you don’t need it! It’s the perfect time to upgrade all your tools without missing anything.

  • Watering can and Hoe first (you’re not using them).
  • Pickaxe and Axe whenever you have the bars.

Prepare for Spring

Use Winter to set up next year:

  • Clear debris and plan your Spring layout.
  • Build and upgrade buildings (Coop, Barn, Shed).
  • Craft sprinklers so you’re ready to plant on Spring 1.
  • Stockpile seeds and gold for the Spring seed rush.
  • Process artisan goods from any crops you stored in the fall.

The bottom line

Winter is a reset and prepare season. Forage for Winter Seeds, mine for ores, upgrade your tools, and get everything ready for a huge Spring. Treat it as maintenance season and you’ll come out stronger in Year 2.
