Skull Cavern Guide: How to Farm Iridium and Prismatic Shards
Master the Skull Cavern in Stardew Valley — how to unlock it, what to bring, and the best strategy for reaching deep floors fast.
The Skull Cavern is the endgame dungeon of Stardew Valley — an endless descent packed with
Iridium,
Prismatic Shards, and treasure. It’s also much harder than the regular mines. Here’s how to conquer it.
How to unlock the Skull Cavern
The Skull Cavern is in the Calico Desert, which you reach by repairing the bus:
- Community Center route: complete the Vault bundles (42,500g total).
- Joja route: pay Joja to repair the bus.
Once the bus runs, ride it to the Desert and head to the cave in the northwest.
What makes it different
- No elevator. Every run starts at floor 1 — you descend as far as you can in one day.
- Floors are infinite. The deeper you go, the more Iridium and treasure spawn.
- Tougher enemies. Serpents, Mummies, Iridium Bats, and more hit hard.
- You need your own ladders — or bombs to clear floors quickly.
What to bring
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| A good weapon (Galaxy Sword ideally) | Enemies hit hard |
Bombs / Mega Bombs |
Clear floors fast |
Staircases |
Skip bad floors instantly |
| Plenty of food | Healing and buffs |
Coffee or Spicy Eel |
Speed and luck buffs |
Cactus Fruit |
Cheap Desert forage for healing |
Get the Galaxy Sword by holding a
Prismatic Shard between the three pillars in the Desert. It’s a massive power jump.
The strategy for deep floors
- Go on a good luck day. Check the Fortune Teller on TV — a “very happy” or “showered with luck” day means more ladders and treasure.
- Eat luck food. Spicy Eel and Lucky Lunch boost your luck, which speeds up finding ladders and holes.
- Bomb clusters of rocks instead of mining one by one. Holes (which drop you multiple floors) are the fastest way down.
- Use staircases to skip infested floors or slow layouts. You can trade
Jade for staircases at the Desert Trader on Sundays. - Don’t fight unless you have to. Your goal is descending, not clearing every enemy.
Enemies to watch for
- Serpents — flying enemies that charge you. Swing as they approach.
- Mummies — they collapse when “killed” but revive; finish them with a bomb to keep them down.
- Iridium Bats and Crabs — tanky, high-damage enemies deeper down.
What you’re farming for
Iridium Ore — for the best tools, sprinklers, and bars.
Prismatic Shards — for the Galaxy Sword, enchantments, and rare gifts.- Treasure rooms — every 10 floors (random) holds a chest with rare loot.
The bottom line
The Skull Cavern rewards preparation and speed. Go on a lucky day, bring bombs and staircases, eat luck food, and focus on descending rather than fighting. Master that loop and you’ll come back with a backpack full of Iridium and Prismatic Shards.
