Sprinkler Guide: Automate Your Farm and Save Hours Every Day
How sprinklers work in Stardew Valley — the three types, their recipes, and the best layouts to stop hand-watering your crops.
Hand-watering crops is the biggest time sink in Stardew Valley. Sprinklers automate it entirely — and the moment you set them up, you reclaim hours every single day. Here’s how to use them.
The three types of sprinklers
| Sprinkler | Waters | Recipe (bars + extras) |
|---|---|---|
Sprinkler |
4 tiles (up/down/left/right) | 1 Copper + 1 Iron |
Quality Sprinkler |
8 tiles (surrounding) | 1 Iron + 1 Gold + 1 Refined Quartz |
Iridium Sprinkler |
24 tiles (5x5 minus corners) | 1 Iridium + 1 Gold + 1 Battery Pack |
You unlock these recipes by leveling the Farming skill (and the Iridium Sprinkler is also sold by Krobus and the Traveling Cart).
Which sprinkler should you use?
- Skip the basic Sprinkler. It only waters 4 tiles and isn’t worth the materials for most layouts.
- Rush Quality Sprinklers. They water a clean 3x3 area and are the workhorse of the mid-game. The hard part is getting Refined Quartz (smelt Quartz) and Gold bars.
- Iridium Sprinklers are the endgame — huge coverage, and you can buy them from Krobus (every Friday) once you reach the Sewers.
To make Quality Sprinklers early, prioritize mining for iron and gold and smelt
Quartz into Refined Quartz. A few trips to the mines and you can automate your whole farm.
Sprinkler layouts
Quality Sprinkler grid
Place Quality Sprinklers in a grid where each covers its surrounding 8 tiles. A common pattern spaces them so every crop tile is watered with no gaps.
Iridium Sprinkler grid
Iridium Sprinklers cover 24 tiles (a 5x5 square minus the four corners). Space them in rows for full coverage.
Tips for efficient watering
- Place sprinklers first, then plant around them. It’s easier than retrofitting.
- Scarecrows matter. Sprinklers don’t protect crops — keep scarecrows nearby.
- Upgrade your hoe to till large fields fast when you set up new sprinkler grids.
- Greenhouse and Ginger Island benefit enormously from sprinklers too.
The bottom line
Automating watering is one of the best investments in the game. Skip the basic sprinkler, rush Quality Sprinklers with mined iron and gold, and eventually switch to Iridium Sprinklers. Once your farm waters itself, you’ll wonder how you ever played without them.
