Friendship Guide: How to Earn Hearts Fast with Every Villager
How friendship works in Stardew Valley — hearts, daily interactions, gifts, heart events, and how to raise (and avoid losing) hearts with villagers.
Friendship is one of Stardew Valley’s core systems. More hearts mean recipes, cutscenes, gifts in the mail, and even marriage. Here’s how it all works.
What hearts mean
Each villager has a friendship meter measured in hearts (up to 10). The more hearts, the friendlier they are.
- 0–2 hearts: Acquaintance. They barely know you.
- 3–7 hearts: Friends. You’ll start receiving recipes and letters.
- 8 hearts: Close friends. For marriageable NPCs, this is the max until you start dating.
- 10 hearts: Best friends (or dating, for romanceable NPCs).
- Marriage: Your spouse can go all the way to 14 hearts.
How to gain friendship
1. Talk to everyone, every day
Simply speaking to a villager gives +20 friendship points once per day. It’s small, but it adds up — and it prevents friendship decay.
2. Give gifts (the big one)
Gifts are the fastest way to build friendship. You can give:
- Two gifts per week to each villager (resets Sunday).
- One extra gift on their birthday — worth 8x the normal amount.
Loved gifts give the most points; hated gifts lower friendship. See our gift guide for a full list.
3. Complete quests
Help Wanted board requests, story quests, and bulletin board bundles all boost friendship with the villager involved.
4. Attend festivals
Some festivals (like the Luau, which involves a community potluck) can raise friendship with everyone at once.
How friendship decays
Friendship slowly decays if you ignore someone — usually by a small amount each day you don’t interact. The key rules:
- Talking resets the decay for that day.
- Maxed-out hearts (8 or 10) stop decaying for non-romanceable villagers.
- Your spouse’s hearts decay faster if neglected, so keep chatting.
Heart events
At certain heart levels, entering a location at the right time triggers a heart event — a cutscene that reveals more about the character. These are worth seeking out:
- They give you story and character depth.
- Some have choices that affect future friendship.
- They’re required to date (8-heart events) and marry (10-heart events) a romanceable NPC.
How to earn hearts efficiently
- Do a daily “gift run.” Carry a stack of a universal love (like gems) and hand them out as you pass people.
- Never miss a birthday. A loved birthday gift is the single biggest friendship boost in the game.
- Talk as you walk. Greet everyone you pass — it costs nothing and stops decay.
- Prioritize the villagers you want recipes or romance from.
The bottom line
Friendship is a slow-and-steady system: talk daily, give loved gifts twice a week, and never miss a birthday. Do that consistently and you’ll unlock recipes, cutscenes, and even marriage far faster than you expect.
